Learning about Flight with Paper Airplanes

August 15, 2016 by Melanie Thomas 1 Comment

Learning how airplanes fly for kids.

Aviation Day is a great time to introduce kids to the world of flight and airplanes.  Aviation Day in Canada is on February 23rd of each year, and in the United States it falls on August 19th. My 6 year old has asked me on more than one occasion: "How do planes fly?"  It might take a couple years to fully explore that answer with her as there is so much one can learn about flight, and at her age, I will need to simplify and use play-based learning.  Even so, there's still a lot a 6 year old ...

Playing With Place Values

May 17, 2016 by Melanie Thomas 1 Comment

Fun math game to help kids learn about Place Values and Decomposing numbers when adding.

My 6 year old is good at math, but she's not a big fan of doing pages of traditional worksheets.  To foster her love of math, I am always on the look-out for finding fun but well thought out ways to learn different math skills.  And I'm slightly picky lol, especially when it comes to math.  If I can't find something that I feel will be ideal, usually I end up creating my own curriculum, which takes time.  So when I find something I can get excited about, I get excited, haha. I emailed Warm ...

Mental Math – Learning To Be A Human Calculator

March 22, 2016 by Melanie Thomas 12 Comments

I honestly don't know how I stumbled across this type of mental math.  Then I watched YouTube video's of kids calculating in their head faster than you could find the answer using a calculator and I was intrigued. It's basically using an abacus to do calculations and then gradually learning to visualize the abacus in your head.  There are various types of abacus'.  One type is called the Soroban. The Soroban was developed in Japan and means "counting tray".  It's widely taught ...

Art History for Kids

October 26, 2015 by Melanie Thomas 11 Comments

teaching art history to kids. Ideal for 4 - 8 year old children.

There are so many great resources available for homeschooling parents to teach art history to even the younger school aged children.  I have a 5-year-old so finding resources that make art history fun to learn and appropriate for her age is my endeavour.  And since the theme of the Poppins Book Nook this month is "Artists", I thought it was the perfect opportunity for me to share some of my great finds. affiliate links are provided for your convenience at no cost to you Anholt's Artists ...

The Hundred Dresses Activity – Paper Doll Chain Card

September 30, 2015 by Melanie Thomas 4 Comments

Paper Doll Chain Tutorial. Making a handmade card craft for kids.

I love making hand made cards for people.  They're a great opportunity to try out various art techniques, and they are a wonderful way to give joy to others, which in turn gives me joy. ow that I'm a parent, I try to share that love with my daughter.   Besides being an art activity and a giving opportunity, it also has the benefit of giving my daughter some great writing practice.  (See my post Art of the Pencil - Learning to Write & Draw). This activity goes well with the ...

The Hundred Dresses – Teaching Kids About Bullying

September 28, 2015 by Melanie Thomas 6 Comments

Teaching Kids About Bullying. Book based Lessons and Activity for the book "The Hundred Dresses".

Bullying is a hot topic in schools and has become an important subject even in our home school. Since I've become a parent, I have come to realize just how young bullying starts. Bullying is not just reserved for older school aged children.  Kids can form clicks, exclude and be mean to other children at quite a young age.  In my experience, I would say at the 4 years old age group was when I started becoming aware of the issue. I have seen my young daughter, at times, take on the role of the ...
