The theme of this months Poppins Book Nook is "Countries Around The World". The children's book I choose is one of my favourites: "The Day The Crayons Came Home". In the story, a little boy named Duncan get's a strange stack of postcards in the mail from some of his crayons that he forgot about or lost over the years. Some of those crayons sent him postcards from various countries around the world. If you have children, in my opinion, this is a must read children's book. It is quite humorous ...

Learning to Code for Younger Ones
Hour of Code During the week of December 4-10, 2017 tens of millions of students around the world will be participating in a global movement known as "Hour of Code". The goal of this hour of code is quite simply to expose as many kids as possible to the world of coding. Of course learning can be done anytime, not just one specific week. And anyone, even preschoolers and pre-readers can begin this journey of learning to code. Why teach a preschooler to code? As technology shapes our ...
Art History for Kids

I have a 5-year-old so finding resources that make art history fun to learn and appropriate for her age is my endeavour. And since the theme of the Poppins Book Nook this month is "Artists", I thought it was the perfect opportunity for me to share some of my great finds. affiliate links are provided for your convenience at no cost to you Anholt's Artists ...
Introducing Beethoven to Girls
This months Poppins Book Nook theme is Composers. Introducing this subject to my daughter has been on my long list of to do's for a while now, as there have been so many natural openings to do so. My daughter LOVES to dance! I mean probably daily she dresses herself up in a costume, sometimes assembles an audience (aka dolls, teddies, or ponies), asks me to put music on for her, and puts on a show. She enjoys dancing a variety of styles but her preferred I'm confident to say is ballet. She's ...
Outdoor Math Fun
Summer is nearly here, my favourite season as we get to be outside quite a bit. Even the house stays cleaner as my daughter is too busy playing in the great outdoors to be making a mess inside. Learning is included as part our regular routine and summer is no different. One game my daughter plays while doing her math is what she calls "Mathscotch". She's been asking me daily lately if we can play "Mathscotch" and how can I say no to a kid asking to do math. :) It's truly helping her fly ...
The Art of the Pencil – Learning to Write and Draw
A little over a year ago, I took my daughter to Disney World in Orlando Florida. It was going to be a long drive (about 22 hours) so I googled tips on taking kids on road trips. I read a ton of different parent recommendations. Many recommendations went something like this: "Of course they have their Leapster, but besides that we...." At this point I had never even heard of a Leapster, but I was intrigued since it seemed like such a popular choice for many, almost like a given. Upon ...
