Grade 2 French Verbs

If you wish to learn French verbs, here are 10 important French verbs to learn and their conjugation.

After learning the most basic French verbs, these are the next 10 to learn. They are also the ten Grade 2 french verbs students learn in french public school in Québec Canada.

In second grade, students learn the present tense of the verbs:

  1. donner
  2. jouer
  3. parler
  4. demander
  5. lire
  6. finir
  7. voir
  8. devoir
  9. vouloir
  10. pouvoir

Learn how to conjugate these French verbs below. You can also download a free printable PDF with their conjugations in present tense.

Conjugating ER verbs

The first 4 verbs are regular ER verbs.

To conjugate ER verbs you first drop the ER:

donner
jouer
parler
demander

And then add the correct ending.

1st person singular (je) add: e
2nd person singular (tu) add: es
3rd person singular (il / elle / on / qui) add: e
1st person plural (nous) add: ons
2nd person plural (vous) add: ez
3rd person plural (ils / elles) add: ent

Donner (to give)

Je donne
Tu donnes
Il / elle donne
Nous donnons
Vous donnez
Ils / elles donnent

Jouer (to play)

Je joue
Tu joues
Il / elle joue
Nous jouons
Vous jouez
Ils / elles jouent

Parler (to talk / to speak)

Je parle
Tu parles
Il / elle parle
Nous parlons

Ils / elles parlent

Demander (to ask / to ask for)

Je demande
Tu demandes
Il / elle demande
Nous demandons
Vous demandez
Ils / elles demandent

The Verb “Lire”

The verb “lire” is an irregular RE verb.

To conjugate the verb “lire” you need to drop the RE:

lire

And then add the appropriate ending:

1st person singular (je) add: s
2nd person singular (tu) add: s
3rd person singular (il / elle / on / qui) add: t

However, since “lire” is an irregular verb, it makes sense that there’s something a bit different we need to think of, then we would with a regular RE verb. In this case, when we get to the plural form, we add an “s” to the beginning of our conjugations. So instead of beginning with “li….” as we do in the singular form, the plural conjugations begin with “lis…..”. And then we add the regular RE type endings:

1st person plural (nous) add: ons
2nd person plural (vous) add: ez
3rd person plural (ils / elles) add: ent

Lire (to read)

Je lis
Tu lis
Il / elle lit
Nous lisons
Vous lisez
Ils / elles lisent

The Verb “Finir”

The verb “finir” is a regular IR verb.

To conjugate the verb “finir” you need to drop the IR:

finir

And then add the right ending:

1st person singular (je) add: is
2nd person singular (tu) add: is
3rd person singular (il / elle / on / qui) add: it
1st person plural (nous) add: issons
2nd person plural (vous) add: issez
3rd person plural (ils / elles) add: issent

Finir (to finish)

Je finis
Tu finis
Il / elle finit
Nous finissons
Vous finissez
Ils / elles finissent

OIR verbs

The verbs “voir”, “devoir”, “pouvoir”, and “vouloir” are OIR verbs. OIR verbs are mostly irregular verbs so it’s just a matter of learning these verbs. These particular OIR verbs are common verbs so with practice they will become second nature.

Voir (to see)

Je vois
Tu vois
Il / elle voit
Nous voyons
Vous voyez
Ils / elles voient

Devoir (must, should, have to / to owe)

Je dois
Tu dois
Il / elle doit

Vous devez
Ils / elles doivent

Pouvoir (to be able to / can)

Je peux

Il / elle peut
Nous pouvons
Vous pouvez
Ils / elles peuvent
