Addition strategies will give kids tools to help them be able to add more easily and quicker. This 31 page downloadable printable contains math worksheets accompanied by instructional tutorials of the addition strategies.
Counting Up: Counting up is when you count up from the larger addend the amount of the smaller addend. If your child (as most children do in their early math learning years) adds 3+6 by counting like this (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) instead of counting (6 – 7, 8, 9), then this will be of great help to them. This is broken down as simply as possible to help even younger children to master this very helpful skill.
Adding 8 or Adding 9: Each of these skills are taught 4 different ways. Tackling these skills from 4 different angles helps them grasp not only the how, but the why. There’s always different ways to come up with an answer, so this allows the student to choose the method that works best for them. No matter which method they gravitate toward, they will learn how to quickly add +8 or +9 addition problems.
Doubles: Rather than straight memorization, this helps the learner master their doubles with image aids and by playing a game.
Near Doubles: to be able to quickly add numbers like 7+8 or 12+13.
Doubles 2 away: this strategy will help them easily add numbers like 6+8 or 11+13.
Friends of 10: number bonds that add up to 10 are practiced throughout.
Grouping by 10’s: learning to add by grouping numbers that add up to 10.
Adding by 10’s
Being able to recognize which strategy will be helpful for a given question is also practiced.
