With pumpkins, candy corn, apples, acorns, leaves, and mushrooms, there’s a little fall fun mixed into the math practice. And since the 8 math worksheets cover place value in several different ways, kids can work on more than simply identifying a digit in a number.

The fall-themed worksheets are great for a place value unit or for extra practice at home or in the classroom.

Full answer keys are available below.

Difficulty Level

These fall place value worksheets are primarily for 2nd grade.

The easier pages work with 2-digit numbers and could also be useful for 1st graders who are ready for extra place value practice. The more challenging worksheets move into 3-digit numbers and expanded form.

Kids will practice:

  • identifying digits in the tens and ones places
  • identifying hundreds, tens, and ones in 3-digit numbers
  • building 2-digit and 3-digit numbers
  • counting base ten blocks
  • representing numbers with base ten blocks
  • writing numbers in expanded form

There is no regrouping required. The added challenge comes from moving between different ways of representing a number and working with numbers that contain a zero in one of the place value positions.

Fall Place Value Worksheets

There are 8 different place value worksheets in the printable PDF.

Pumpkin Place Value Worksheet

The first worksheet is a place value color-by-code activity.

Kids look at the tens or ones digit of each 2-digit number and use the code at the top of the page to determine what color to make the pumpkin.

For example, one color might be used for numbers with a particular digit in the ones place, while another is used when a specific digit is in the tens place.

It gives kids practice paying attention to where a digit is located, not simply finding whether that digit appears somewhere in the number.

Candy Corn Tens and Ones Worksheet

Next is a candy corn worksheet for practicing tens and ones.

There are 12 two-digit numbers. For each one, kids write how many tens and how many ones are in the number.

For example, when given 58, they would write 5 tens and 8 ones.

Hundreds, Tens, and Ones Worksheet

This fall leaf worksheet moves on to 3-digit place value.

Kids are given 5 three-digit numbers and write the digit that belongs in each of the H, T, and O boxes for hundreds, tens, and ones.

2nd grade hundreds tens and ones worksheet for identifying place value in 3-digit numbers

One of the numbers has a zero in the tens place, giving kids practice recognizing zero as an important placeholder in a number.

Build 3-Digit Numbers

On this acorn worksheet, kids continue working with hundreds, tens, and ones, but the format changes.

Each row has a 3-digit number on a basket of acorns. Kids separate the number into its hundreds, tens, and ones digits and write one digit on each of the 3 large acorns.

There are 5 numbers to complete.

Build 2-Digit Numbers

This worksheet uses the same idea with 2-digit numbers.

Kids look at the number on each apple basket and write its tens and ones digits on the 2 large apples.

tens and ones place value worksheet where kids build 2-digit numbers by writing digits on apples

One of the numbers is only a single digit. This gives kids the added challenge of recognizing that the number has 0 tens.

Count the Base Ten Blocks

The next worksheet gives kids visual place value practice with base ten blocks.

For each problem, kids count the tens rods and individual ones cubes. They then record how many tens and ones they counted before writing the complete number in the In all box.

This helps connect a visual model of a number with its standard form.

Draw and Expand 2-Digit Numbers

Now kids get to create the base ten models themselves.

There are 5 two-digit numbers. For each number, kids draw the appropriate tens rods and ones cubes in the Draw column.

Then they break the number apart and write it in expanded form.

So rather than only recognizing a place value model, kids have to move from the number to the model and then to its expanded form.

Draw and Expand 3-Digit Numbers

The final worksheet adds hundreds to the same activity.

Kids draw base ten blocks to represent each number using hundreds, tens, and ones. Then they write the 3-digit number in expanded form.

The numbers include examples with a zero in one of the place value positions, so kids need to think about the value of each digit rather than simply follow the same pattern for every question.

How the Place Value Activities Work

The worksheets give kids several ways to work with the same underlying place value concepts.

They begin by identifying tens and ones and determining a digit’s position within a number. From there, kids work with hundreds, tens, and ones, count visual base ten models, and eventually create their own models.

The final worksheets connect standard form, base ten blocks, and expanded form. This progression gives kids practice seeing that the same number can be represented in different ways.

How to Use These Worksheets

You don’t have to complete all 8 worksheets at once. You could use them throughout your place value lessons and choose the pages that match what your child is currently learning.

Some easy ways to use them include:

  • use one worksheet at a time as you introduce a new place value skill
  • add them to a fall math center or independent work
  • use individual pages for extra practice with a skill your child is finding difficult
  • save the Draw and Expand pages for later in your place value unit
  • use the easier tens-and-ones pages with younger children and the 3-digit pages with 2nd graders
