The Hundred Dresses – Teaching Kids About Bullying

September 28, 2015 by Melanie Thomas 6 Comments

Teaching Kids About Bullying. Book based Lessons and Activity for the book "The Hundred Dresses".

Bullying is a hot topic in schools and has become an important subject even in our home school. Since I've become a parent, I have come to realize just how young bullying starts. Bullying is not just reserved for older school aged children.  Kids can form clicks, exclude and be mean to other children at quite a young age.  In my experience, I would say at the 4 years old age group was when I started becoming aware of the issue. I have seen my young daughter, at times, take on the role of the ...

Introducing Beethoven to Girls

How to Introduce Beethoven the Composer to Girls

This months Poppins Book Nook theme is Composers.  Introducing this subject to my daughter has been on my long list of to do's for a while now, as there have been so many natural openings to do so.  My daughter LOVES to dance!  I mean probably daily she dresses herself up in a costume, sometimes assembles an audience (aka dolls, teddies, or ponies), asks me to put music on for her, and puts on a show. She enjoys dancing a variety of styles but her preferred I'm confident to say is ballet. She's ...

Forest Scavenger Hunt – Identifying Plants in Search of the Perfect Paint Colors

June 29, 2015 by Melanie Thomas 3 Comments

Forest Scavenger Hunt for Kids- The Search of the Perfect Paint Color. Based on the Sophie Mouse book series.

Our family lives in a forest, so I was very happy when I saw that the theme for the Poppins Book Nook this month is "Forests and Woods".  Going along nicely with the theme, I chose the book A New Friend (The Adventures of Sophie Mouse) My daughter received this book as a gift.  The cover looks cute and adorable but I will be honest, I initially dismissed this book as a good book for when she's a bit older.  My daughter can read common kid words, but looking at the vocabulary of the book, I knew ...

May 25, 2015 by Melanie Thomas 6 Comments

Book based lesson ideas based on the Caldecott Medal winning book "Make Way For Ducklings".

Make Way for Ducklings was the winner of the Caldecott Medal in 1942. Make Way for Ducklings is about two ducks (Mr. and Mrs. Mallard) raising their family of 8 ducklings in the busy city of Boston.  The parents have some challenges keeping their young safe but they do get some help from a friendly police officer. It's not by accident that Make Way for Ducklings has been loved by generation after generation and still remains a favourite childrens book ...

Farm Spelling Activity

April 27, 2015 by Melanie Thomas 1 Comment

A book related spelling activity for kids. Farm vocabulary based on the book "The Cow Loves Cookies". Free 11 page printable with word phonetics scavenger hunt.

As part of our farm unit this month, we read the children's book "The Cow Loves Cookies", by Karma Wilson. To go along with our reading of the book, I created a fun printable book activity that I will share with you. It's a spelling activity, a coloring worksheet, a word scramble, and a spelling scavenger hunt. It uses farm themed spelling words found in the book "The Cow Loves Cookies". Even so, this spelling activity could still be used with most farm themed children's books. This ...
