an orange tent at a campsite with text "10 Educational Activities to do While Camping"

Camping season is in full swing with (much) warmer days and families claiming their favorite spots at the local state (or provincial) parks. Even if you’re taking a relaxed approach to homeschooling this summer, you can still combine the excitement of camping with some hands-on, nature-filled activities that will have your kids learning without even realizing it. I have put together a guide of educational activities to do while camping to help with just that. Plant ...

Studying the Chipmunk and What It Eats

April 10, 2017 by Melanie Thomas 3 Comments

Studying Chipmunks and their sources of food. Free colouring printables to help kids learn what chipmunks eat.

I have decided my daughter will continue her "Animal Studies" learning about local animals, animals she can actually study in real life herself.  We are currently studying the chipmunk. If she were older I would give her a notebook to take outside to jot down her observations on the chipmunk.  She's only 4.  Although she can print her letters and draw pictures, the notebook method would be very impractical and slow at her age.  However, I still feel animal observations can still be made at her ...

Foraging With Kids

Summer is here and it's the perfect time of year for some outdoor learning.  This summer my daughter and I have begun learning foraging.  My 5 year old is naturally interested in learning to forage as she is always looking outdoors for things she can eat.  Honestly, it's my duty to learn this with her so she learns what is poisonous and what she can and should not eat. She knows dandelions are safe to eat, so whenever she sees one, she grabs it, and plucks the little flower petals to eat just ...

Forest Scavenger Hunt – Identifying Plants in Search of the Perfect Paint Colors

June 29, 2015 by Melanie Thomas 3 Comments

Forest Scavenger Hunt for Kids- The Search of the Perfect Paint Color. Based on the Sophie Mouse book series.

Our family lives in a forest, so I was very happy when I saw that the theme for the Poppins Book Nook this month is "Forests and Woods".  Going along nicely with the theme, I chose the book A New Friend (The Adventures of Sophie Mouse) My daughter received this book as a gift.  The cover looks cute and adorable but I will be honest, I initially dismissed this book as a good book for when she's a bit older.  My daughter can read common kid words, but looking at the vocabulary of the book, I knew ...
