Here’s a free printable colors crossword puzzle for kids.

It’s a fun crossword puzzle and spelling activity for young learners in early elementary.

It will give kids practice spelling color names and color vocabulary.

And it doesn’t matter if you spell it “color” or “colour”, there’s a version of the puzzle for each spelling.

A black and white printable colors crossword puzzle for kids. The puzzle has 12 clues. 7 of the clues are written in images of crayons. Each crayon needs to be colored, each color based on its clue. Then kids can write the color name in its spot in the puzzle.

Difficulty Level

The difficulty level of this crossword puzzle is easy.

It’s ideal for younger elementary children around 2nd grade. In fact, most of the puzzle’s words are grade 2 spelling words, making this an excellent 2nd grade spelling activity.

The puzzle has 12 clues to solve. The majority of clues will be easy enough for kids to solve.

There is one clue that kids might not know the answer to just yet – the clue “it’s what makes colors visible.” The answer is light.

Before giving kids the puzzle, they might benefit from a brief mini science lesson on light and color and maybe even rainbows.

Color Words

Kids will work on spelling the color names red, blue, yellow, green, black, white, pink, and brown.

The puzzle also has the color vocabulary: rainbow, dark, light, and color (or colour).

Instructions

The fun colors word puzzle is a no-prep spelling activity.

There are 7 images of crayons with a clue in each. Kids can begin the puzzle by coloring each crayon, the color based on the clue written inside the crayon.

After coloring the crayons, the next step is to write their color names in the appropriate word boxes of the puzzle.

Then it’s time to work on the 5 remaining clues, down and across. If kids have trouble answering these, I suggest showing them one of the short YouTube videos I linked above. There’s one on light and color and another on rainbows.
