Easy Arctic Animals Word Search

This free printable easy arctic animals word search for kids is a simple winter-themed activity that helps children explore animals that live in cold, icy regions of the world.

It was created with younger learners in mind and works well at home, in the classroom, or as part of an Arctic or winter unit.

The word search includes familiar animals like polar bear, walrus, seal, and snowy owl, along with a few less common Arctic animals that many children may be seeing for the first time.

The puzzle comes in four different versions, so you can choose what works best for your kids:

  • Lowercase letters
  • Color

Skill Level

This is an easy-level word search and is ideal for early elementary students, particularly those in 1st or 2nd grade.

All of the hidden words can be found horizontally (left to right) or vertically (top to bottom). There are no diagonal, backwards, or upside-down words, making the puzzle approachable for kids who are still learning how word searches work.

The puzzle has 12 hidden arctic animal names to find and circle in a 12 X 14 grid of large, easy-to-read letters. You can choose between an uppercase or lowercase version. Printing the lowercase version slightly increases the difficulty level and works well for kids who are ready for an extra challenge.

Some of the animal names may be less familiar to beginner readers than those found in some of my other easy-level word searches. For example, the bird ptarmigan (pronounced tahr-muh-guhn) may be a new word for some children. For early readers, it can be helpful if a parent or teacher goes over the words together before starting the puzzle.

To support learners, each word is paired with a picture of the animal, making it easier for kids to connect the written word to what the animal looks like. This makes the puzzle both accessible and educational, even when some of the vocabulary is new.

Educational Benefits

Even if some of the animals are new to your child, that’s part of the learning. Puzzles like this often spark curiosity and questions, giving kids a chance to learn about Arctic animals they may not have heard of before.

It can naturally lead to conversations, book searches, or quick lookups about where these animals live, what they eat, and how they survive cold environments.

In that way, this word search works as both a literacy activity and a gentle introduction to Arctic science.

It’s also a helpful activity for practicing:

  • Vocabulary and spelling
  • Visual scanning skills
  • Focus and attention

Because the puzzle is intentionally kept simple, it works well for independent work, literacy centers, early finishers, or a calm, screen-free activity.

Answer Key

You can find the color-coded answer key below.

If a child asks for help, the color-coded answer key allows an adult to quickly see where a word is without having to search through the puzzle themselves.

Rather than giving the child the answer, gently guide them toward it, for example, by narrowing down the area they should look in. This will support kids while still letting them do the work themselves.
