What is a Fill-In Puzzle?
A fill-in puzzle is different from a crossword. Instead of clues, kids are given a list of words and must figure out where each one fits.
The words are grouped by how many letters they have. Each word can only go in a space that matches its length, which helps narrow down the options.
As kids start placing words, the crossing letters help confirm if a word is correct or not. In most cases, there’s only one spot where each word will fit, so it becomes a process of testing, adjusting, and solving as you go.
Difficulty Level
This is a medium-to-difficult-level puzzle for kids who are ready for a bit more of a challenge.
It’s ideal for 4th grade and up, but older kids and even adults can enjoy the challenge too.
The puzzle has 54 farm-themed words to fit into the grid, ranging from 3 to 11 letters long.
The words are grouped by length, with 3 to 14 words in each group.
It includes spelling words from a farm-themed 4th grade spelling list, making this a great option if you want a spelling worksheet that feels more like a puzzle, and can handle the challenge.
How to Solve the Puzzle
A good place to start is by looking for spots that are easier to figure out.
I tried some of the usual strategies for this type of puzzle, but there were still multiple options, and I couldn’t narrow things down right away.
Usually, I wouldn’t begin with 4-letter spots in this puzzle, since there are a lot of 4-letter words, which means too many possibilities.
However, two 4-letter word spots that intersect at the first letter caught my eye, so I decided to start there.
I looked at the 4 letter word group and see if there are words that share the same starting letter. That narrowed it down to words beginning with B or P.
I tried the P words first: PEAR or PLOW. If one of those fits, the last letter (R or W) would also need to match the first letter of a 9-letter word. But none of the 9-letter words start with those letters, so I was able to rule that option out.
That left the B words. The two options there are BULL and BARN, which end in either L or N. So next, I checked the 9-letter words to see if any start with those letters.
LIVESTOCK starts with an L, and there aren’t any 9-letter words starting with N. That tells me the correct fit is BULL, which connects with LIVESTOCK.
Once that piece is in place, it becomes much easier to keep going and work outward from there.
