Letter M Beginning Sound Worksheet

This first letter M worksheet invites kids to look through a collection of pictures and color only the ones that begin with the M sound. It’s designed for kindergarten, but also an excellent review for 1st graders.

The letter M coloring page has 37 images in total, with 25 of them that need to be colored.

Kids will only need some crayons to color familiar items like a map, monkey, mushroom, mittens, monster, and more.

It’s perfect for helping young learners strengthen their understanding of beginning sounds and build their vocabulary with words that start with the letter M.

Letter M Phonics Worksheet

The second letter M phonics worksheet adds an extra layer of challenge by focusing on syllables. It’s ideal for students in 1st grade.

Instead of focusing on just the beginning sound, 1st graders will practice identifying the syllable that contains the M sound, whether it’s at the beginning, middle, or end.

Kids will look at each picture, say the word out loud, and figure out which syllable contains the M sound. Then they’ll place an X in the correct box beneath its picture.

For example, one of the images is a watermelon. There are 4 connected boxes below the image, each representing a syllable.

Children might find it helpful to lightly clap while saying each part of the word.

Hopefully, kids notice that the M sound is found in the 3rd syllable. Then all they need to do is draw an X in the 3rd box below the watermelon image.

A letter M phonics syllable worksheet answer key. It shows which syllables in 12 different words contain an M sound. Kids need to put X's in each box representing the syllables they hear an M sound. They should have put an X in the first syllable in the words chimney, dominoes, ambulance, umbrella, hamburger, and numbers; the last syllable in farmer, helmet, ice cream, and snowman; the middle syllable of flamingo, and the 3rd syllable in watermelon.
