G or J Sound Worksheet
This next worksheet is best for 1st and 2nd grade students learning to spell. The soft G sound can sometimes be spelled with a G and other times with a J.
The worksheet has 21 words with a missing letter. There are pictures for each word to help early readers identify the words. For each word, kids will need to write either a lowercase g or j.
But not to worry if that sounds too hard. This G and J worksheet will teach kids some tricks to help them know which letter to use when.

Tricks to Teach Kids
To decide whether a word is spelled with a J or a G, teach kids to look at the vowel that comes right after the J sound.
If the vowel is an A, O, or U, then they can use a G (for a hard G sound) or a J (soft G sound).
To help kids remember the vowels A, O, and U, one trick I taught my daughter is with the name Douglas. The vowels in the name are O, U, and A. Another name you could use is Joshua, which also has those vowels, and begins with the letter J.
If the vowels are I or Y, both a hard and a soft G sound are usually spelled with a G. The vowel I does have a few exceptions, like the words jig, jingle, and jitter.
The vowel E is a little trickier, as there are more exceptions. A general guideline for these words would be to notice where in the word the J sound is being heard.
If it’s the initial sound, chances are the word is spelled with a J. If it’s anywhere else in the word, most likely it is a G.
