Letter R Beginning Sound Worksheet

The first letter R worksheet is a fun coloring activity that will ask kids to identify words that begin with R.

The alphabet coloring worksheet has pictures of 27 items. Children will need to sound out the word of each image and then color each object that begins with an R sound. 16 of the 27 things have the initial R sound.

Young learners only need some crayons to color the robot, rose, and rooster.

Letter R Phonics Worksheet

Here’s another alphabet worksheet that will give kids extra practice with the R sound. It’s especially ideal for 1st graders to learn or review the letter sound.

The letter R sound could be anywhere in the word. There are initial /r/ words, medial /r/ words, words that end in an /r/ sound, and words with multiple R sounds.

It’s a great time to introduce R-controlled vowels: AR, ER, IR, OR, and UR sounds.

There are 12 images. Children will need to sound out the word of each image to try and determine which syllable(s) have an R sound.

They might find it helpful to clap while saying each syllable.

For example, children will be shown an image of a rollercoaster. Underneath the image will be 4 boxes, each representing a syllable.

This word begins with the letter R sound and has 2 R-controlled vowels.

Since the R sound is found in the 1st, 2nd, & 4th syllable, kids will need to put an X in the 1st, 2nd, and 4th boxes below its image.
