Learning to Bake Bread & A Craftsy Class Giveaway

March 10, 2014 by Melanie Thomas 4 Comments

child learning to bake bread

I used to bake bread I would say about once a month.  I was never taught the secrets of bread baking, but was able to follow a recipe and enjoyed freshly baked bread for an occasional breakfast.  It turned out decent enough I thought.  My daughter wanted to help me, but since I had no real bread baking skills to teach her, I wasn't too keen on teaching her my roughing it ways.  If I'm going to teach her something, I want to teach her correctly. I was already enrolled in 18 online classes on ...

Splash Math Review

Splash Math

If you've seen my blog post on ixl math, you know I really like the program and had previously purchased a one year subscription for my daughter. I have since purchased another year subscription. My biggest draw to ixl is it's completeness skill wise. You can see very clearly all the math skills for that grade level and which ones your child has learned and has still to learn. However, despite how much I do appreciate this program, there are still 2 things I wish were different. The first is ...

Preschool Duck Theme Activities

February 26, 2014 by Melanie Thomas 4 Comments

Here are some fun duck activities for preschoolers. It includes: book lists, music ideas, arts and crafts, games, colouring & cut and paste printables, videos to learn about ducks, duck jokes and more. Ducks became the theme of our preschool homeschool this winter. We feed the birds every winter.  This year, the seeds that fell to the ground from the bird feeders attracted the attention of 2 ducks.  Those ducks spent all afternoon in front of our window just sitting on the snow below ...

The Art of the Pencil – Learning to Write and Draw

January 26, 2014 by Melanie Thomas 3 Comments

teach your preschooler to write and draw

A little over a year ago, I took my daughter to Disney World in Orlando Florida.  It was going to be a long drive (about 22 hours) so I googled tips on taking kids on road trips.  I read a ton of different parent recommendations.  Many recommendations went something like this: "Of course they have their Leapster, but besides that we...."  At this point I had never even heard of a Leapster, but I was intrigued since it seemed like such a popular choice for many, almost like a given.  Upon ...

Writing Stories With Preschoolers

December 28, 2013 by Melanie Thomas 1 Comment

Writing stories with preschoolers can be a fun and memorable experience.   My 3 year old daughter loves to draw pictures and I've been encouraging her to tell me a story about them.   I've been typing her story as she dictates it to me.  They are usually crazy funny as her thoughts aren't all connected but I do notice improvement with connecting thoughts with each passing story.   I often email her stories to different friends and family.  She likes this and it motivates her to want ...

Teaching Your Preschooler To Read – Part 2

December 25, 2013 by Melanie Thomas Leave a Comment

So I'm hoping that you were able to try the picture flashcards in Part 1 and you're convinced that your child is ready to begin this journey we call reading. Let me tell you about a series of books that I absolutely recommend for teaching a child to read.  Many of you might have already heard of it as it's not new.  In fact, it's the series of books my mom taught me to read with when I was young, and now I've been using them to teach my daughter with.  It's called the "Ladybird Key Words ...
